A TWIN upsets rocked the Civil Service Anniversary chess competition which resumes this afternoon at the Capitol Chess Park in Cagayan de Oro City.

Top-seeded bet and skipper of the Kuyamis team champion Lorenzo ‘Jun’ Cuizon of Cluster 1, smelling he’s within a grasp of a third-straight win, sacrificed a piece with compensation.

Apparently, it backfired in the face of Noel Paguidopon’s solid defense and accurate counterplay in their top-board match.

“The sacrifice was correct, but I missed the winning continuation. It was judgement error,” Cuizon told Gold Star Daily.

Cuizon’s Cluster 1 fellow Joven Berondo got also upset, thus leaving the second seed William Reintegrado and the comebacking Zulita as the only competitors in the 24-man chess rivalry with perfect three points.

“Taas pa ang Swiss system seven rounds nga kombate. Daghan pa ang mahitabo sa nabilin nga four rounds,” warned Berondo.
