By SHIELA MAE BUTLIG and NICOLE MANAGBANAG Correspondents GINGOOG City--A councilor here on Tuesday challenged the highest ranking officials of Misamis Oriental and this city to allow themselves to be subjected to unannounced drug tests so they could set an example in the government’s war on illegal drugs. Councilor Marlon Kho called on Misamis Oriental Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano, Reps. Peter Unabia and Juliet Uy of the 1st and 2nd districts, Vice Gov. Jose Mari Pelaez and provincial board members to allow themselves to be tested anytime. Kho also challenged Gingoog Mayor Marie Guingona and all other local government executives in Misamis Oriental to allow themselves to be subjected to surprise drug tests. In Gingoog, Kho said, Mayor Guingona is the only local official who has yet to be tested. And yet, he said, the mayor issued a directive to make members of the city council undergo drug tests in coordination with the police and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA). Kho claimed that all Gingoog councilors and even Vice Mayor Ruthie Guingona have tested negative for drug use. “We would like to set the example in Gingoog,” said Kho, chairman of the city council’s peace and order committee. “Nananawagan ko sa kadagkuan, sa mga political leaders, to do the same thing” as a show of support for President Duterte’s campaign against the illegal drug trade. Emano said there was no need for Kho to make such a challenge because random drug tests are being done at the capitol every quarter. He said he has always been the first on the line. Vice Gov. Pelaez, for his part, said he accepts Kho’s challenge. “I am willing to undergo drug testing, including all board members,” said Pelaez.
