By LITO RULONA Correspondent CITY engineer Rolando Pacuribot on Tuesday said  the flooding problem in areas around the Bitan-ag Creek is already in the hands of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). Pacuribot said this even as he pointed out that last week’s floodwaters that inundated major road sections in the city last week came from Bukidnon. That volume of water from the uplands was something the city was unprepared for. “We will rely now on DPWH,” said Pacuribot, citing a major drainage project about to be carried out by the public works department. “Kung maealize kini nga project, we will make a diversion from Bitan-ag Creek,” he said. Pacuribot said the city has grown so big that Bitan-ag Creek is no longer enough. He said the creek was not clogged because of the local government’s “Hapsay Suba” campaign and clean-up program. “Walay naka-sampong adto nga mga basura. Mi-awas lang gyud ang tubig adto sa kadalanan,” he said. He added: “Limketkai and other housing units maoy usa sa factor ngano nga dili na gyud kaya sa Bitan-ag Creek.” Pacuribot said city hall would also implement drainage projects in the uplands to complement the DPWH project. Meanwhile, the general manager of Limketkai center, called on the government to quickly act on the urban flooding problem here, saying the city could lose more opportunities. Jerome dela Fuente asked city hall to inform the firm about its plans. He said they also brought the concern to the attention of Mindanao Development Authority (Minda) head Abu Khayr Alonto. Dela Fuente said the Limketkai group’s Luxe Hotel feared the cancellation of events. “The recent flood never happened in the past,” he said. Dela Fuente said the hotel’s guests who witnessed last week’s flooding reacted negatively. “They even said they will no longer be coming back to Cagayan de Oro. We have eight more national conference to be held until the end of May. We want to know what the exact program and solution would be. This already affects our business,” dela Fuente said. “Is there a plan? What is the program of the city. I want to know. We cannot afford to lose these big events.”
