A Chinese project engineer was killed instantly after a 1.6kV generator set fell on him at a proposed cellular site tower project in North Poblacion in Medina, Misamis Oriental while super typhoon Odette was rampaging across the region at about 11 pm, Wednesday.
Medina Chief of Police Maj. Arnold Sala identified the fatality as Lai Zouyo, 37, a project engineer.
Based on his police spot report, Zouyo was checking the generator set when the ground collapsed due to the heavy rainfall. While the soil slid, Zouyo fell into the pond of rainwater below and the generator set followed.
In an interview with the Gold Star Daily, a witness said there were two Chinese, Zouyo and a certain Jang Lei who were there during the night of the accident to inspect the project site.
“Nataban pagkahulog si Zouyo og naligpit sa generator samtang si Lei naka ambak,” the witness said.
The witness said Zouyo was a project engineer while Jang Lei is the contractor of the said project allegedly owned by the Dito Communications Company.
It was noticed that Jang Lei, who survived the tragedy, was not included in the police spot report.
It was learned that Zouyo was retrieved at around 1 am the following day (December 17) with the help of Moresco II in using their boom truck.
The victim’s remains are currently at Barcelona Funeral Homes in this town waiting for his mother and other members of the family to arrive from mainland China.
