CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Residents can expect faster emergency response during disasters as the city launched National Disaster Resilience Month on July 1 with the presentation of new rescue and communication equipment aimed at improving disaster operations.
During the DRRM Caravan and Static Display at SM CDO Downtown Premier, disaster officials and rescue teams showcased upgraded emergency tools, including advanced communication radios, hydraulic cutters, inflatable rescue boats, and other life-saving equipment.
Authorities said the new equipment will help responders reach victims more quickly during floods, earthquakes, and other emergencies, especially in areas where damaged roads, collapsed structures, or poor communication often delay rescue operations.
Officials added that improved communication devices will allow emergency teams to coordinate even when cellphone signals are interrupted during disasters.
For families living in flood-prone and riverside communities, the upgraded rescue capabilities provide added reassurance as Northern Mindanao continues to face threats from typhoons, flash floods, and other calamities.
Office of Civil Defense-10 Regional Director Antonio B. Sugarol said disaster resilience depends not only on stronger government systems but also on active community participation.
Sugarol emphasized that preparedness works best when government agencies, rescue teams, and residents work together before emergencies happen.
City disaster officials also reminded families to strengthen preparedness at home by preparing emergency “go-bags” containing drinking water, ready-to-eat food, medicines, flashlights with extra batteries, cash, and important documents stored in waterproof containers.
Residents are also encouraged to identify the nearest evacuation center in their barangay and create a simple family emergency plan.
Authorities said early preparation at home, combined with improved rescue response, can help protect lives and reduce risks during disasters.
The city’s National Disaster Resilience Month celebration will continue throughout July with preparedness activities, disaster awareness campaigns, and emergency drills aimed at helping communities become more disaster-ready.
