There was a transport strike in Cagayan de Oro on Monday. So I took the day off, too.
Since I was at the gym on Sunday, Monday became my Sunday—stayed home and wrote the columns for this week.
In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve been writing a lot about the uptowner—a.k.a. moi—avoiding downtown Cagayan de Oro because of the traffic and the floods and the chaos there. But a major change in my sked will now require me to be in the downtown area at least three times a week. It’s an essential change and I didn’t even think twice when the possibility was presented to me.
What’s the use of staying in one place if the other venue will also be beneficial to the health journey? Let’s try this new choice then.
“The only constant is change,” as the saying goes. It’s our reaction to change that will determine the way we survive.
And changes may require reading Stephen Covey’s book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” where he wrote about Circles.
It was my low-carb doctor, Dr. Don Agcopra, who illustrated the Circles to me. A low-carb medical consultation is not only about medical prescriptions. It’s a total approach to health, from food to coping mechanisms, thus, his reference to Covey’s book.
The Circle of Concern is everything you care about. The Circle of Influence is what you can do something about. The Circle of Control is what you can, well, control. Simple, eh? In a diagram, Concern is the outer circle, with Influence inside it, and Control at the core. And there are only a few things we truly control.

While Doc Don was telling me about the Circles, I was like, Hey, I read that book. How could I forget its teachings? But I have—kind of. Nowadays, I forget a book’s plot or lessons right after reading it. Yes, what’s the use of reading if that’s all I get, huh? Still, I read. A lot.
Anyway, what exactly is making me go to downtown CDO? The Big Bite at Centrio Mall, of course. Definitely worth the estimated one-hour round-trip travel on a good day. On bad days—such as the alleged payouts during the campaign season—the one-way travel could last for almost two hours and that’s at midnight.
MiMo Cafe and Jacks Halo Halo were the main reasons for my frequent attendance at last year’s Big Bite. They’re not there this year, so my focus has shifted to Manoink, Stibs House, and Vonchok Kabkaban—carnivore galore.
And then Engr. Marco Reyes posted on Facebook the Carnivore Diet Spectrum which made me realize I’m ketovore since I’m still using coconut cooking oil, coco aminos, and apple cider vinegar.
If diet were drawn as an example for the Circles, the whole food industry would be the Circle of Concern, my low-carb environment is my Circle of Influence, and my specific low-carb choice—hopefully carnivore in the near future—is my Circle of Control. Am I right? Or am I wrong? Hmm.
