IN their final preparation for the big war ahead in Ozamiz, Northern Mindanao woodpushers will head to Butuan City for Caraga’s own chess festival tomorrow, July 5.
Dubbed as ‘Atty. Felbeth A. Palangan, CPA: Chess Festival-Open Rapid Chess Tournament,’ the day-long event will start 10 am at the SM Mall of Butuan City, welcoming all chess lovers from beginner to master levels.
Up for grabs are some P45,000 in total cash prizes in the Open Rapid and 17 and below categories.

Top “panalay” players in Northern Mindanao, who already registered for the Butuan chessfest, include Cagayan de Oro’s Nazario Ubanan and Bryan Jose and Zamboanga City’s Raymond Salcedo.
“This event is made possible through the generous support of Atty. Felbeth A. Palangan, CPA, a dedicated member of our chess club whose passion for the game continues to inspire our local talents,” said event coordinator Rhenz Auza, even as he acknowledged the Balanghai Woodpushers Club and SM City Butuan for their joint undertakings in supporting the tournament.
From Butuan, grand chess skirmishes in Mindanao will shift to Ozamiz City on July 12 for the much awaited 5th Asenso Ozamiz Open Chess Tournament, staking P500,000 up to P1-million in total cash prizes plus trophies.
