BUKIDNON — A 25-year-old Indian tourist was injured over the weekend after plunging nearly 40 feet when a resort zipline snapped due to old age and wear.
The incident occurred on June 14 at the Greek Hills Resort in Barangay Sinuda, Kitaotao—a popular, upscale tourist area along the Bukidnon-Davao border.
According to Police Major Joan Navarro, spokesperson for the Police Regional Office 10, the zipline cable snapped just as the victim neared the landing platform, sending him crashing 39 feet to the ground. Investigators blamed the structural failure on the cable's "advanced age and prolonged use."
The tourist received immediate first aid at the German Doctors facility in Buda, Bukidnon, before being evacuated to a hospital in Davao City. Police have withheld his identity pending notification of the Indian Embassy in Manila.
Authorities are also looking into a potential cover-up by the resort. "We are investigating why the resort took two days to report the incident," Navarro said, noting that the police only discovered the accident through a Facebook post.
Following the incident, the local government of Kitaotao issued a Cease-and-Desist Order today (June 16) against Greek Hills Resort.
Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 10 Director Mae Salvaña-Unchuan confirmed the closure, adding that the establishment was operating without DOT accreditation.
