PUBLIC interest in the proposed redrawing of Bangsamoro parliamentary districts is surging, with lawmakers racing to finish hearings by Dec. 12 to accommodate the influx of feedback.
Member of Parliament Atty. Naguib Sinarimbo said the turnout for the consultations has been unexpectedly high compared to previous years. The hearings cover Parliament Bills 403, 407, 408, 411, and 415, which aim to establish 32 new parliamentary districts across the region.
Sinarimbo said he was “overwhelmed” by the turnout and the level of participation.
In Cotabato City alone, an estimated 262 residents attended the Monday session — a figure Sinarimbo noted was significantly higher than past consultations. This follows earlier rounds held in Tawi-Tawi, Basilan, and the Special Geographic Areas (SGA).
Racing against the clock
The Parliament began these sessions in early November and is now pushing to conclude the final leg. Upcoming consultations are set for Maguindanao del Sur on Dec. 10 and Maguindanao del Norte on Dec. 12.
The goal is to wrap up all sessions by Thursday, Dec. 12. This timeline ensures the joint Committees on Rules and Local Government have enough time to digest the public’s input and prepare a report for the plenary.
Community feedback
Sinarimbo noted that the high attendance has translated into substantive feedback. He said participants recommended adjustments to how municipalities are clustered in Tawi-Tawi and Basilan, as well as changes to specific contested areas in Lanao del Sur.
According to Sinarimbo, this broad participation is vital for crafting a law that is fair, constitutionally sound, and reflective of the people’s will.
