CAGAYAN de Oro’s Barangay Consolacion, among those heavily affected by the mega-dike project causing the relocation of some families, will come to life on Saturday, October 5, with the staging of a rapid chess tournament.
Staking around P15,000 in total cash prizes, the day-long, seven-round Swiss system tourney, with a time control of 10 minutes plus two seconds increments, will be held along Abellanosa street, colloquially known as ‘Ilalom sa Tulay.’
Entry fees are pegged at P250 for the Open, P150 for the 13 and younger, and free (no registration) for the Consolacion residents.
“Adunay mga noted chess players nga kusog ang strength unya residente sa Consolacion ang uban na-relocate lang pagsugod sa construction sa mega dike. We expect them to come on Saturday and compete,” pairing specialist and arbiter Arian Belly ‘Arbz’ Calido told Gold Star Daily, referring to master caliber Nazario Ubanan, Bobby Salomon and the Corrales siblings, Lynyrd Aleksei and Leia, who are now both government employees.
Limited to just 60 participants on a first-come first-serve basis, the Ilalom sa Tulay Consolacion Rapid Chess Showdown is presented by the Consolacion Barangay Council through its chairman Derby Pacudan.
Prizes are P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000 for the top 3 finishers. Fourth and fifth placers will receive P800 and P500 each with the rest of the top-10 performers getting P300 each.
Additional prizes will be given to the top-10 performing Consolacion chess players. First to fourth will receive an additional P1,000, P800, P6,000, P400 respectively with the rest getting P200 apiece.
