FOR the first time, the coastal barangay of Bonbon, Cagayan de Oro City will hold an Open Chess Tournament today as one of its major pre-fiesta sports highlights that include beach volleyball, sikad race, amateur boxing, and sepak takraw.
“Sports development among the youth will always have a special place in our programs of governance kay kini mopaligdong kanila to become a better person and even good leaders in the future,” said Barangay Bonbon chairwoman Lelit Baal-Molina, who fully supported the endorsement of Kagawad Jerome Sambaan for the staging of a chess tournament.

A total of P10,000 in cash prizes plus medals will be up for grabs in the day-long rapid chess competition that will be held at the barangay’s basketball gym which is still undergoing a major renovation.
The Golden Chess Friends, the Cagayan de Oro’s main sporting arm in chess promotion, will handle the technical side of the Bonbon chessfest which is expected to draw the participation of the finest chess talents in the locality.
Barangay Bonbon SK chairman Edjimar Nagac Bunayog and members of the Barangay Council such as Lope Matildo, Michael Adame, Irvin Paul Paasa, Norberta ‘Dhedhe’ Baslot, Jacky Lynne Biongcog, Neil Bacud and Sambaan are invited to join chairwoman Baal-Molina in conducting the ceremonial chess moves on Monday morning.
