LAMITAN, Basilan was formally declared free of Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) presence on Monday, June 9 — a historic and hard-earned victory, according to Bangsamoro Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua.
“This achievement marks not only the end of a violent chapter, but the beginning of a new era rooted in peace, unity, and collective courage,” Macacua said in a statement sent to Gold Star Daily Wednesday, June 11.
Macacua credited the leadership of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for his strong support of peace and security efforts across Mindanao. He said the administration’s commitment was vital to achieving this milestone and advancing the peace process in the Bangsamoro region.
Special Assistant to the President Antonio Ernesto F. Lagdameo Jr. and Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity Carlito G. Galvez Jr. joined the people of Basilan during the declaration, which Macacua described as a show of solidarity in the country’s shared journey toward national unity.
He also commended the residents of Basilan, praising their resilience, discipline, and cooperation, which he said were crucial to this success.
The statement highlighted the leadership of Basilan Gov. Hadjiman Salliman and Rep. Mujiv Hataman, along with other local officials who remained committed to protecting and uplifting their communities.
Macacua also expressed deep appreciation for the unwavering dedication of the security forces — particularly the Philippine Army, the Philippine National Police, the Basilan Provincial Police Office, and the Western Mindanao Command led by Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete.
As part of the celebration, surrendered firearms were publicly destroyed at the Basilan Provincial Capitol in Lamitan. Macacua said the event was more than symbolic, calling it a clear message that the people have chosen peace over violence, and hope over fear.
“This moment belongs to every person who stood firm and believed in peace,” he said.
The declaration was made official through Resolution No. 01, Series of 2025, unanimously passed during a joint meeting of the Provincial Peace and Order Council and the Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council held in February.
