WITH experience on their side, the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA junior varsity players from the City of Gold swept the podium’s top three in another Fide-Rated junior chess event in Cagayan de Oro.
The Perpetual Altas troika of Romeo Canino, Christian James Aquino, and Ronald Canino made a 1-2-3 finish in the high school division of the Golden Chess Friends (GCF) Students Rapid Chess Championship concluded on Wednesday (December 28) at the Event Center of Limketkai Mall.
Youthful trader Romeo Canino defeated Joel Lawrence Hoy in the seventh and final round to register 6.5 points good for the champion’s purse of P5,000.
Aquino outplayed Adrian Othniel Yulo of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, while Ronald Canino overpowered David Rey Ancheta of Cagayan de Oro’s Corpus Christi School as they finished with identical six points.
Better tiebreak results, however, propelled Aquino to the second spot worth P3,000 as Ronald Canino settled for the P2,000 third prize also with a trophy.
“I did appreciate the final round skirmishes. It was fighting chess on the top boards patay gyod walay negotiation,” Ben Wabe of the organizing Golden Chess Friends told Gold Star Daily.
Yulo and Keith Adriane Ilar of El Salvador City both scored 5.5 points to land in fourth and fifth places after the Bucholz tiebreaker.
Tied in a big bunch of five-pointers are Aljie Cantonjos, Ancheta, Cassey Miguel Tabamo, Hoy, Ruelle Canino, Kharl James Manliguez, Norzel Key Engracia and Lorebina Carrasco II, sharing sixth to 13th places, as fellow 4.5-pointers Sebastian Marbas, Lynel Francis Miguel Codera, and Janrick Lagunay complete the top-16 out from a total of 65 entries.
