MAGUINDANAO DEL SUR — Security forces in the Bangsamoro region have stepped up preparations for the first regular Bangsamoro parliamentary elections, setting tighter coordination measures to prevent terrorism and election-related violence.
The move followed a Provincial Joint Peace and Security Coordinating Committee (JPSSCC) meeting held on May 11 at Camp Datu Akilan in Shariff Aguak, where military and police officials assessed the peace and order situation and finalized joint deployment strategies ahead of the September 14, 2026 polls.
The meeting was led by Maguindanao del Sur Police Provincial Office Acting Director PCol. Michael John C. Mangahis, alongside senior officials of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, including 601st Infantry Brigade Commander BGen. Edgar L. Catu, 602nd Infantry Brigade Commander BGen. Ricky P. Bunayog, and 1st Mechanized Brigade Deputy Commander Col. Emil Rex C. Santos.
Officials reviewed crime trends, counter-terrorism operations, and ongoing inter-agency efforts, including intelligence monitoring and troop deployment adjustments across the province.
A key focus of the discussion was securing the 2026 parliamentary elections, with the AFP and PNP agreeing to intensify security operations to deter violence, extremist threats, and other destabilizing activities.
Authorities said enhanced monitoring, increased troop presence, and closer coordination with the Commission on Elections and local government units will be implemented to secure polling centers, election personnel, candidates, and voters across Maguindanao del Sur.
The meeting concluded with the formulation of a joint strategic deployment plan to strengthen security coverage in identified hotspots.
In a separate briefing in South Upi on May 14, PCol. Mangahis said authorities have begun assessing election candidates, including reviewing backgrounds and possible security risks as part of standard election security protocols.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Special Assistant to the President announced that about 9,000 police personnel will be deployed across the Bangsamoro region for election security, supported by specialized units from the PNP, Armed Forces, and Philippine Coast Guard under a whole-of-government approach.
Earlier, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. urged Bangsamoro residents to actively participate in the elections, emphasizing unity, accountability, and democratic engagement as key to sustaining peace gains in the region.
