“MY account got hacked!” is a common lament by Filipino social media users and even among users of the multi-varied online services of the Internet.
A common reason for such occurrences typically happens due to simple forgetfulness in logging off computers and other devices. Patrons of internet cafés and other shared electronic devices usually fall victim to hacked accounts.
Filipinos who spend a lot of time online are used to creating passwords for all their online activities. The upward trend of streaming services online makes it necessary to create passwords that, ironically, are shared among family and friends.
In a new study released by NordPass, a global security password manager service, it was found that people use the weakest passwords to secure their streaming accounts. However, the strongest passwords are used on financial services platforms.
In what will probably be surprising to most Filipinos, the most popular password in the Philippines is “admin,” most likely the standard, pre-configured password that people do not bother changing. This is a common trend worldwide as well- internet users sticking to already pre-configured passwords.
Still in the Philippines, love also serves as an inspiration for people’s passwords: “iloveyou” makes one of the most common passwords. Similarly, “valentine” is trending in Belgium, and “Sexy1234” in South Africa.
Internet users often use numbers in their passwords. This year, the world’s most common password “123456” is ranked second in the Philippines. Almost a third (31%) of the world's most beloved passwords this year consist of similar numerical sequences.

As many as 70% of the passwords in this year’s global list can be cracked in less than a second. Stealer malware attacks are considered a major threat to people’s passwords, especially those saved on a browser.
