IN a historic milestone for the Bangsamoro region, Lanao del Sur Governor Mamintal ‘Bombit’ Alonto Adiong Jr. was honored at the Gusi Peace Prize International 2025, becoming the first Filipino Muslim political leader to receive the award in the foundation’s four-decade history.
Adiong was one of 23 individuals from around the world recognized during the ceremony held at the Metropolitan Theater in Manila on Wednesday, Nov. 27.
Widely regarded as Asia’s foremost peace award, the Gusi Peace Prize recognizes global leaders and institutions contributing to peacebuilding, humanitarian service, and human development.
Adiong was honored for his decades of public service, specifically highlighting his leadership during the 2017 Marawi Siege. Then serving as Vice Governor, Adiong remained in the provincial capitol throughout the five-month conflict to oversee operations.
The foundation also cited his “BOMBIT” Program (Building Opportunities for a Meaningful Bangsamoro Inclusive Town), his administration’s receipt of the DILG Seal of Good Local Governance, and his efforts in improving the province’s economic standing.
“I am deeply honored as the representative of the Philippines to stand among this year’s laureates—individuals who have made remarkable contributions to peace, human dignity, and the betterment of communities. To be in your company is both humbling and inspiring,” Adiong said in his acceptance speech.
Adiong dedicated the award to the country’s peacemakers and the Moro people.
“The award belongs to… our elders who dreamed of self-determination, our leaders who paved the way for the Bangsamoro autonomy, and our communities [who] continue to build from conflict to resilience and hope,” he said. “Our history as Moros is marked by struggle, resistance, displacement, and the long fight for dignity.”
He paid tribute to his family, crediting his late grandfather, Senator Acmad Dumucao Alonto; his father, Mamintal ‘Mike’ Adiong Sr.; and his mother, former Gov. Soraya Alonto Adiong, for shaping his dedication to public service.
Global recognition
The event was led by Chairman Barry Gusi and Dr. Evelyn Gusi. Chairman Gusi emphasized the importance of honoring individuals whose achievements inspire global unity.
“I am a man of humanitarianism… many heads of state, scientific researchers, academicians, economists, and politicians — much more people will believe in peace,” Gusi said.
This year’s laureates hailed from Brazil, Colombia, Djibouti, Ecuador, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, India, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Maldives, Russia, Serbia, and the United Arab Emirates. The United States had three laureates: Congressman Kurt Weldon, Dr. Michael Chen, and Vijay Karia.
