THIRTY-six years. In human years, that’s just shy of a midlife crisis.

In newspaper years, that’s practically an eternity, especially in an industry that’s seen more reinventions than Madonna.

Yet, here we are, celebrating the Gold Star Daily’s 36th anniversary, and it’s fair to say we’re not just surviving; we’re still sparkling.

Born in 1989, when “online” meant waiting for your dial-up to connect and “social media” was shouting across the street, the Gold Star Daily has navigated the tumultuous seas of news with surprising grace.

While other papers have folded faster than a politician’s promise, GSD has clung on, proving that local news, delivered with grit and a dash of stubbornness, still matters.

We’re still comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable.

One might wonder, in this age of TikTok journalism and instant updates, how does a print newspaper stay relevant?

Perhaps it’s our uncanny ability to report on everything from barangay fiestas to bewildering local politics with equal vigor.

Or maybe it’s the comforting thud of the morning paper hitting your doorstep, a tangible connection to the community that a thousand push notifications can’t replicate.

We’ve seen mayors come and go, typhoons rage, and infrastructure projects begin (and sometimes, famously, not quite finish).

Through it all, the Gold Star Daily has been there, chronicling the daily absurdities and triumphs of Cagayan de Oro and beyond.

It’s a testament not just to the paper itself, but to the enduring, albeit sometimes perplexing, human need to know what’s going on next door.

So, here’s to 36 years, Gold Star Daily.

May our ink flow freely, our headlines remain witty, and may we continue to remind people that even in a digital world, some stars are still best appreciated in print.

Cheers to many more years of holding up that mirror to Mindanao, smudges and all.
