IN a significant breakthrough for the troubled province of Misamis Occidental, three ex-rebels have surrendered to authorities, signaling a possible turning point in the region's pursuit of peace.
The three members of the Guerilla Front Sendong, known by their aliases "Gino," "Rica," and "Jeboy," formally surrendered to the 10th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Salimpuno, Sapang Dalaga on Monday. Their surrender is seen as a major development in the ongoing peace process in the area.
"Gino," who bore a gunshot wound on his left forearm, and "Jeboy," with a similar wound on his right forearm, told authorities that the lack of medical care, food shortages, and the constant threat of military operations had driven them to lay down their arms. The physical and emotional toll of life on the run had become unbearable, they said.
The surrender of the three ex-rebels underscores the success of the Philippine Army's civil-military operations in the province. The army, under the leadership of Governor Henry S. Oaminal, has been working tirelessly to foster peace and unity in the region.
In particular, Resolution No. 513-22, enacted last year, has played a vital role in the peace process. The resolution offers financial assistance to local communists who choose to surrender and reintegrate into society.
The 10th Infantry Battalion has been proactive in disseminating the resolution across the province, reaching out to armed groups and demonstrating the government's commitment to peace and development.
Senior military officials have praised the surrender as a significant step toward achieving lasting peace in Misamis Occidental. LTC Jose Andre Monje, the 10th Infantry Battalion Commanding Officer, urged other members of the Guerilla Front Sendong to surrender and reintegrate into society.
Meanwhile, BGen Elmer Suderio, the 102nd Infantry Brigade Commander, called on NPA members to lay down their arms and embrace a peaceful life. He emphasized the government's readiness to support their reintegration into mainstream society.
MGen Antonio Nafarrete, commander of Joint Task Force ZAMPELAN, also appealed to the remaining members of Guerilla Front Sendong to surrender, promising care and assistance from the Provincial Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (PTF-ELCAC).
